DENIM 101

Hey there, welcome back! Today we're discussing one of my latest obsessions - styling jeans! We all have a pair and I'm finally learning that going the extra mile, even for a casual outfit, is always worth it. So dig through your wardrobe and find all the jeans you own, especially the ones from 2010 that you've kept because you have a slight hoarding problem, and jump into this post with an open mind!

The extra tight skinny jean trend is quite possibly the worst one I followed. I have countless embarrassing photos of myself in skin tight jeans that allowed only for the bare minimum of movement, extra fabric scrunched up at the ankles, fingers holding up a peace sign (if you lived through the early 2000’s, I’m sure you have these too). I now know that – A) hundred percent cotton denim is the only way to go (none of the added polyester), B) scrunched up fabric round the ankles is never a good look and C) these are two denim rules to live by.

I believed everyday denim too casual to style but, wearing good quality, correct fitting denim pieces is actually the easiest way to look chic. If you’ve ever seen models sporting jeans, they always look voguish and the key to achieving that is finding a classic style for you. From what I know, no one can go wrong with a pair of high waisted, straight- legged jeans. Invest in one of these and you’ll have a faithful friend to rely on at all times.

Most importantly, don’t downplay your outfits! I never used to think about elevating my look with denim. But some dainty jewellery, a belt and good shoes can truly make the basic t-shirt and jeans look polished. Here is a photograph I recently took of my friends that showcases two different styles of jeans as well as different ways to put a denim outfit together. Both looks carry the essence of good taste despite being far apart in their aesthetics.

One big, big tip – just because the people around you don’t take any particular interest in dressing up, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. Wear what makes you feel good, and if adding a little extra to your daily denim outfit does that for you, then go for it.

If one thing, I hope you take away that jeans don’t have to be boring. Find the right size for you, stay away from anything that isn’t good quality (pricy yes, but thrifting is a great way to get your hands on good jeans for cheaper. I thrifted my current favorite pair from @thrift.nthrive), make a conscious effort into your overall outfit and nothing can stop you from looking gorgeous in your jeans.

Till next time, have fun dressing up!💜
